Johnny Depp and Bobby DeLeon launch Three Hearts Rum, a seven-year Dominican Republic rum finished in Cognac barrels. Available now at ThreeHearts.com.
Aged in ex-bourbon, Oloroso, and Cognac barrels, the inaugural expression is available now at ThreeHearts.com
Three Hearts Rum has officially launched. The super-premium Caribbean rum founded by actor Johnny Depp and entrepreneur Bobby DeLeon is now available for purchase at ThreeHearts.com, marking the debut of a project years in the making.
The two founders have been close friends for decades, and the spirit behind the brand is rooted in that relationship as much as it is in the liquid itself. Depp has spent more than twenty years with deep ties to the Caribbean; developing a firsthand appreciation for the region’s rum-making culture, the people who sustain it, and the traditions that define it. After hurricanes caused widespread devastation across several Caribbean islands in recent years, Depp and DeLeon began exploring how they might create a rum that honored those communities while bringing attention to the craft behind the category.
The result took time. That was intentional.
Seven Years in the Making
The inaugural expression is produced in the Dominican Republic using traditional rum-making methods and aged for seven years across three cask types. It begins five years in ex-bourbon barrels with a touch of Oloroso sherry influence, then spends an additional two years in ex-Cognac barrels before bottling.
That’s a layered maturation profile, and each stage leaves a mark. Ex-bourbon barrels lay the structural foundation — vanilla, caramel, a gentle sweetness from the American oak.
The Oloroso influence adds a subtle dried fruit and nutty complexity that keeps the mid-palate from going one-dimensional.
The Cognac finish is where it gets interesting: French oak and the residual character of aged brandy contribute a refined floral note and a longer, drier finish than a straight bourbon-barrel rum typically delivers. At seven years in a tropical climate — where heat accelerates maturation significantly compared to Scottish or Irish aging conditions — the liquid arrives at the bottle with real depth.
Serve it neat or over a single large ice cube to let it open up. If you’re building a cocktail, an Old Fashioned format works well here — the Cognac-finished character holds up against bitters and a touch of demerara without losing what makes it worth using in the first place.
“Rum holds the history of the islands,”
johnny Depp
“It’s shaped by the hands of the people who grow the cane, ferment the spirit and age it over time. Bobby and I wanted to create something that honored that tradition and the friendships that inspired it.”
A Bottle Designed by Depp
The packaging is as considered as the liquid. Depp designed the bottle himself, drawing on personal symbolism from his own tattoos and philosophy. Embossed on the glass is the flag of his island — assembled from tattoo imagery, each carrying specific meaning. A skull as a reminder to live fully. A lightning bolt representing enduring friendship. The number three for new beginnings. Three hearts for the loves of his life.
It’s a more personal bottle brief than most spirits brands give their designers. Then again, most spirits brands aren’t founded by someone who designed it himself.
A bracelet-style charm encircles the neck. At the base: the brand’s guiding motto:
“No Fear. No Malice. No Envy.”
“We didn’t want to rush something into the world,” said DeLeon. “This rum represents years of patience and collaboration. Our goal was to create something that respected the heritage of Caribbean rum while sharing the spirit of the friendship that started it.”
What Comes Next
The inaugural expression is the first chapter in a larger vision. Depp and DeLeon have stated their intention to explore distinctive rum-making styles and cultural heritage from across the Caribbean in future releases — spotlighting the regional differences that make the category as varied and interesting as any in spirits.
For now, Three Hearts Rum is available exclusively online at ThreeHearts.com.
