Texas chef Preston Nguyen claims his second World Food Champion title and $100K at the 2026 Final Table in Bentonville.
There’s a moment in competitive cooking when technique stops being the point. The knife work is clean, the temperatures are right, the plating is precise — and then something else happens. The food says something about the person who made it.
That moment happened at Brightwater: A Center for the Study of Food in Bentonville, Arkansas, on the final day of the 2026 World Food Championships Final Table.
Chef Preston Nguyen of Arlington, Texas, stood in front of a judging panel with a dish born from two cultures — Vietnamese and Mexican — and the result wasn’t fusion in the diluted, airport-restaurant sense. It was a story. And it won him $100,000 and his second World Food Champion title.
The First Two-Time Champion in History
Nguyen first claimed the World Food Champion title in 2021. Five years later, standing in the same arena dynamic — ten category champions, three brutal challenges, one title — he did it again. No one had ever done it twice.
The 2026 Final Table presented by Sam’s Club brought together champions from ten culinary disciplines: World Chef, Vegetarian, Sandwich, Burger, Noodle, Barbecue, Live Fire, Dessert, Seafood, and Bacon. Each arrived having already won their category in the 2025–26 season. The Final Table is not a warm-up. It is, as WFC Founder and CEO Mike McCloud put it:
“where the absolute best in Food Sport come together
to push the boundaries of
creativity, composure, and culinary excellence.”
Ten category champions walk into a kitchen. Only one walks out with a hundred thousand dollars and a title that comes with a hyphen. That’s Food Sport, which is a phrase that somehow works.
Three Challenges, One Arc
The competition ran across three rounds. Nguyen finished second in Challenge #1, the Member’s Mark Masterpiece. He posted the highest score in the field in Challenge #2, the Taste & Recreate challenge — the kind of round that separates technical memory from genuine palate. He then closed it out in Challenge #3, the Global Mash-Up, where competitors were asked to bring personal heritage to the plate.
That final dish — Vietnamese and Mexican, two border cuisines in the broadest sense, both built on bold aromatics and patient technique — was the moment the competition turned into something worth writing about. The judges didn’t just score it. According to the WFC, it resonated. There’s a difference.
Supporting Nguyen throughout the weekend: members of his own family, working the kitchen beside him. Whatever was on that plate came from somewhere real.
The family-in-the-kitchen detail is the kind of thing that sounds like a cooking show edit until you realize it’s just how some people actually cook — and why their food tastes the way it does.
What the WFC Has Built
The World Food Championships launched in 2012 and has since grown into a genuinely global competitive culinary platform, drawing participants from nearly 40 countries and every U.S. state. Beyond the competition mechanics, it has become a pipeline: new recipes, elevated careers, and community partnerships with food banks and nonprofit organizations nationwide.
Finishing second at the 2026 Final Table was Surabhi Suri of Dubai, UAE, the World Vegetarian Champion — a podium placement that carries its own significance in a competition historically dominated by meat-forward categories. Third place went to David Casey of Brockton, Massachusetts, the World Sandwich Champion.
The next chapter begins October 15–18 at the Indiana State Fairgrounds & Event Center in Indianapolis, where WFC2026 will open a new season of Food Sport and the road to the next Final Table starts again.
