Coronavirus Game-Changer: NBCUniversal Makes Theatrical Movies Available On Demand Immediately

After years of debate about shrinking the theatrical window, NBCUniversal is scrapping it altogether.

According to a new report, the company is going to release several Universal Pictures’ theatrical offerings on-demand at the same time that they hit theaters.

A Game-Changing Decision

According to The Hollywood Reporter, NBCUniversal is taking the unprecedented step of making “its current movies from the Universal Pictures stable — including the upcoming event family movie Trolls World Tour — available on-demand at the same time they hit those theaters that remain open during the coronavirus pandemic.”

Starting as early as Friday, March 20, 2020

Theatrical films including Universal’s The Hunt and The Invisible Man and Focus Features’ Emma will be available to stream on a variety of on-demand platforms. (Trolls World Tour will hit theaters and on-demand on April 10, 2020.)

The movies will be available for “a 48-hour rental period at a suggested retail price of $19.99 in the U.S. and the price equivalent in international markets.”

For most of the last decade, there have been conversations in Hollywood about shortening the theatrical window – minimizing the length of time between a film’s theatrical release and home viewing.

Theaters have been fighting to preserve the extended window,

Will This Be Hollywood’s New Normal?

Sources acknowledge this simultaneous release plan “isn’t a blanket policy for the studio’s entire 2020 calendar, and that decisions regarding other titles and the duration of the policy haven’t been made yet.” NBCUniversal CEO Jeff Shell issued a statement commenting on the policy:

“Given the rapidly evolving and unprecedented changes to consumers’ daily lives during this difficult time…

the company felt that now was the right time to provide this option in the home as well as in theaters. NBCUniversal will continue to evaluate the environment as conditions evolve and will determine the best distribution strategy in each market when the current unique situation changes.

Universal Pictures has a broad and diverse range of movies with 2020 being no exception. Rather than delaying these films or releasing them into a challenged distribution landscape, we wanted to provide an option for people to view these titles in the home that is both accessible and affordable. We hope and believe that people will still go to the movies in theaters where available, but we understand that for people in different areas of the world that is increasingly becoming less possible.”

The question becomes: once this move has been initiated, can studios return to their old ways?

Coronavirus: Disneyland Reacts to Pandemic, details here!

Disney has temporarily closed theme park in California because of the coronavirus outbreak.

The novel coronavirus outbreak continues to rapidly spread across the country. Over the past week it has officially become a pandemic increasing in the U.S., Asia and across Europe.

This is the fourth time in history that Disneyland has fully closed operations, following Sept. 11 attacks, after JFK’s assassination and the Northridge earthquake.

Disney’s statement:

“While there have been no reported cases of COVID-19 at Disneyland Resort, after carefully reviewing the guidelines of the Governor of California’s executive order and in the best interest of our guests and employees, we are proceeding with the closure of Disneyland Park and Disney California Adventure, beginning the morning of March 14 through the end of the month. The Hotels of Disneyland Resort will remain open until Monday, March 16 to give guests the ability to make necessary travel arrangements; Downtown Disney will remain open. We will monitor the ongoing situation and follow the advice and guidance of federal and state officials and health agencies. Disney will continue to pay cast members during this time.”

Closures seemed inevitable after Los Angeles Gov. Gavin Newsom called for gatherings with more than 250 people to be canceled or delayed in an effort to halt the transmission of the virus. Officials are also encouraging “social distancing” of six feet per person.

Disney announced closed doors to its theme parks after cancellations of major entertainment industry events like South by Southwest and Coachella. The NBA suspended its season Wednesday night after a player tested positive for coronavirus.

Coronavirus Crisis: Find out how Coachella, Stagecoach Affected?

Coronavirus continues to startle major cities and events.

Inside reports reveal that both Coachella Festival and Stagecoach Music Festival will be announcing scheduling postponement due to concerns over the coronavirus.

Further reports suggest Goldenvoice is developing a new strategy to re-schedule for consecutive weekends in early October — eyeing an Oct. 9 start.

For several years Coachella Valley Music and Arts Festival, has repeated the same lineup over two weekends place April 10-12 and again April 17-19.

The scheduled nightly headliners were:

Rage Against the Machine

Travis Scott

Frank Ocean

Stagecoach, one of the nation’s biggest annual country music festivals

was dated to follow on the same location in Indio April 24-26, with…

Carrie Underwood

Eric Church

Thomas Rhett

2016’s Desert Trip festival, otherwise known as Oldchella, a hugely profitable successful music gathering that was held in the fall — from October 7 to 9 and 14 to 16 — at the same site as Coachella and Stagecoach: Indio’s Empire Polo Club (polo is only played at that location from January to March).

Desert Trip featured:

Rolling Stones

Bob Dylan

Paul McCartney

Neil Young

Roger Waters

and The Who

on the bill and grossed more than $160 million.

The Coachella Valley and the city of Indio have the accommodations to receive tens of thousands of attendees. So far local government hasn’t forced a cancelation of Coachella or Stagecoach due to coronavirus, while five cases reported in Riverside County push it closer to a fait accompli.

By moving the festivals as opposed to canceling them, Goldenvoice — and parent company AEG — could shield itself from having to trigger cancelation insurance that may or may not cover communicable diseases.

PHD Terrace’s ‘Butterfly Effect’

PHD Terrace is taking a 180° approach on the

fourth edition of their Instagram-famous Moscow Mule.

PHD Terrace || Butterfly Effect, $115 – Courtesy of Nikki McCutcheon, Tao Group Hospitality Beverage Director

The one-gallon cocktail for up to 8 people – the Butterfly Effect ($115) – crafted by seasoned Beverage Director Nikki McCutcheon, will feature 2020’s top trending ingredient Butterfly Pea Tea.

Plucked from the Clitoria ternatea plant and steeped in water overnight, the ultramarine blue petals are drained of their color and mixed with PHD Terrace’s housemade simple syrup for added flavoring.

Watch table-side as the Butterfly Effect Moscow Mule transforms from a deep blue to a rich lilac as the colorful liquid hits the acidic beverage. Replacing the traditional copper mug with an oversized clear barrel jar, the shareable cocktail will be served with vodka, ginger beer, lime juice, and a botanical blend, topped with edible fresh florals.

“My inspiration for this year’s variation of the Mega Moscow Mule…

…that New Yorkers have come to love and adore was to…

…create a cocktail with a visual appeal that has a “wow” moment…

…when the cocktail hits the table – in this case the chemical reaction of the botanical blends when poured tableside, the Butterfly Effect!

I wanted to move away from the traditional copper mug that is synonymous with Moscow Mules and create a fresh take on the classic cocktail for the spring and of course, National Moscow Mule Day. Our mule ties in the trending butterfly pea tea ingredient and plays on the bright floral design elements from the venue – living as a perfect, photo ready and tasty spring drink to share with friends.” – Nikki McCutcheon, Beverage Director

Known for past year’s Orange Blossom Moscow Mule, Build Your Own Moscow Mule Bar and Mega Mule Ice Cream Float, this year’s eye-catching cocktail will only available at PHD Terrace from March 3rd to March 31st.

RECIPE: **one-gallon cocktail & serves 6 – 8 people
