Studies show the light emitted from a smartphone really does mess with your quality of sleep.
Instead, here are some healthier ways to unwind at night, a roundup of things to do before bed that don’t include your phone. You’ll thank yourself tomorrow:
1. Read a book
Ditch netflix for a captivating novel. Studies show reading can help improve sleep.
2. Call your mom
It’s never a bad idea to connect with Mom. Plus, talking with a loved one like your mom can help reduce stress, and lower stress is a crucial component when it comes to dozing off.
3. Take a warm bath or shower
The ideal temperature for sleep is around 68 degrees — and a warm bath is arguably the most relaxing way to get you there. Whether it’s a steamy bath or shower, and then slowly cool down once you get out, giving you the perfect prep for rest.
4. Meditate
Breathe in, breathe out, find sleep. Meditation can help people relax and get a better night’s rest. Even just a few minutes will do the trick.
5. Have sex
Your bed should be reserved for two things only: Sleep and sex. Why not engage in the latter before reaching the prior? Bonsu: Sex produces oxytocin, the feel-good hormone released in the brain, and decreases the stress hormone cortisol.
6. Write in your journal.
Too anxious to drift off? Long-hand write it out instead of typing it out in a Facebook status.
7. Drink some tea.
Sip on warm and comforting beverages before crawling into someplace warm and comforting.
8. Craft time
De-stressing is the name of the game for pre-bed. Crafts like knitting or even coloring can help you relax. It’s a creative way to unwind and prep your mind for sleep.
9. Listen to music
Try some soft ballads or calming music (not hard rock or an uplifting concerto). Pair your concert with a sleep-promoting lavender calendar and just enjoy a few moments of using your senses. But please make sure to extinguish the flame and the tunes before closing your eyes in for the night.
10. Get a good yoga stretch
Namaste. Yoga hosts many benefits, including lower stress and a calmer mind. Try a pose before bed.
And because we’re having fun with this, here’s an extra:
11. Manifest your relaxing scene
Picture yourself stretched out on a beach. Allow your mind (imagination) to put yourself in the ideal scenario to help you relax.
