RIP Jack Cakebread, the Napa Valley wine pioneer dies at 92.<\/em><\/p>\n Jack Cakebread<\/strong>, Napa Valley Wine pioneers who lead the transformation of the Napa Wine Country to become a global sensation in the 1970s, died on April 26.<\/p>\n Advertisement<\/p>\n <\/a><\/p>\n The founder of Cakebread Cellars<\/strong>, with his wife, the late Dolores Cakebread, Jack was 92.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n “Jack was a leader in the renaissance of Napa Valley,”<\/p>\n said vintner Tim Mondavi. ”<\/p>\n He and Dolores were a team that elevated both the food and the wine of the valley.”<\/p><\/blockquote>\n<\/div>\n Dolores Cakebread, known for Cakebread Cellar’s American Harvest workshops<\/strong>, which included food, wine and viticulture, passed away in 2020.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n After serving in the Air Force, Cakebread took up photography<\/strong> and studied with the renowned landscape photographer Ansel Adams<\/strong>.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n Cakebread’s work at the Museum of Modern Art in Los Angeles and offered him a job shooting photos for “A Treasury of American Wines<\/strong>,” a book written by Nathan Chroman.<\/p>\n Related:\u00a0 Wine Lovers Cameron Diaz, Katherine Power introduce White & Ros\u00e9 Cans to Avaline Lineup<\/a><\/span><\/i><\/p>\n In February 1972<\/strong>, the photography assignment brought him to Napa Valley<\/strong>. On his way back home to Oakland, he visited a friend’s 22-acre ranch near Rutherford.<\/p>\n His casually offered to purchase his friend’s walnut orchards for just over $2,000 \u2014 and to his surprise, they accepted the the offer.<\/p>\n The rest is Cakebread history.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n In 1973, Cakebread Cellars produced its first wine<\/strong>, 157 cases of Chardonnay with help from their neighbor Robert Mondavi<\/strong>.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n Tim Mondavi praised Cakebread’s “long-term vision<\/strong>. He was a long-term thinker and planner,” he said. “His insight on estate planning reflected his confidence in his children.”<\/p>\n<\/div>\n Years later, after his sons took over management of Cakebread Cellars, Jack continued to be active at the winery and in wine industry affairs.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n He and wife Dolores traveled the U.S. and the world meeting with distributors, retailers, restaurateurs and consumers.
