He then moved to \u00a0<strong>championing specialty film titles<\/strong>, via several publicity campaigns for\u00a0<a id=\"auto-tag_miramax\" href=\"https:\/\/deadline.com\/tag\/miramax\/\" data-tag=\"miramax\">Miramax<\/a>\u00a0and other indie outfits.<\/p>\n<p><strong><a href=\"https:\/\/dailyovation.com\/2019\/01\/13\/mark-urman-indie-film-dies-66\/screen-shot-2019-01-13-at-5-43-32-pm\/\" rel=\"attachment wp-att-15594\"><img fetchpriority=\"high\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter size-full wp-image-15594\" src=\"https:\/\/dailyovation.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/01\/Screen-Shot-2019-01-13-at-5.43.32-PM.png\" alt=\"\" width=\"489\" height=\"333\" srcset=\"https:\/\/dailyovation.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/01\/Screen-Shot-2019-01-13-at-5.43.32-PM.png 489w, https:\/\/dailyovation.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/01\/Screen-Shot-2019-01-13-at-5.43.32-PM-300x204.png 300w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 489px) 100vw, 489px\" \/><\/a><\/strong><\/p>\n<p><strong>Urman<\/strong> became a noted tastemaker, serving as distribution chief at\u00a0<strong>Lionsgate<\/strong>\u00a0for awards bait like\u00a0<strong><em>Gods and Monsters<\/em><\/strong>\u00a0and\u00a0<em><strong>Shadow of the Vampire<\/strong>.<\/em>\u00a0He also executive produced films including\u00a0<i><strong>Monster\u2019s Ball<\/strong>\u00a0<\/i>before moving on to head theatrical for\u00a0<strong>ThinkFilm<\/strong>. In the 2000s, put out a mix of critically and commercially successful titles like\u00a0<strong><em>Murderball<\/em><\/strong>,\u00a0<strong><em>Before the Devil Knows You\u2019re Dead<\/em><\/strong>,and\u00a0<strong><em>Half Nelson<\/em><\/strong>, which netted a young <strong>Ryan Gosling<\/strong> his first Oscar nomination.<\/p>\n<p>In 2009, <strong>Urman<\/strong> founded <strong>Paladin<\/strong>, whose releases have included Shana Feste\u2019s\u00a0<strong><em>The Greatest<\/em><\/strong>, Tom Shadyac documentary\u00a0<strong><em>I Am<\/em><\/strong>\u00a0and, in a joint release with Unison, Taika Waititi\u2019s vampire comedy\u00a0<strong><em>What We Do in the Shadows<\/em><\/strong>.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Urman<\/strong> is survived by his wife, Deborah Davis, an author of books including\u00a0<em>Gilded: How Newport Became America\u2019s Richest Resort<\/em>\u00a0and\u00a0<em>Party of the Century<\/em>\u00a0about Truman Capote\u2019s Black and White Ball.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Mark Urman, a prominent figure in the independent film and distribution business for over the past decade, and the head of\u00a0Paladin\u00a0Film, has died at age 66\u00a0 The cause of death was cancer.
