The first truckload of freshly picked grapes rolled into Mumm Napa&#8217;s\u00a0<span class=\"xn-location\">Rutherford<\/span>\u00a0winery around\u00a0<span class=\"xn-chron\">10:30 a.m.<\/span>, where their arrival was celebrated by winemaker\u00a0<span class=\"xn-person\">Ludovic Dervin<\/span>. Dervin gave a traditional toast to the start of harvest followed by a dramatic &#8220;sabering&#8221; of a bottle of Mumm Napa sparkling wine. The winery&#8217;s celebratory kickoff concluded with winery workers participating in a cork-pop &#8220;salute,&#8221; simultaneously popping corks in unison, spraying each other and excited onlookers with bubbly.<\/p>\n<h3>STAY UP TO DATE ON THE\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/dailyovation.com\/category\/lifestyle\/\">LATEST LIFESTYLE ARTICLES HERE<\/a><\/h3>\n<p>The 2018 vintage has been marked by welcomed plentiful winter rain, followed by warm summer afternoon temperatures and cool nights, for a steady and even ripening that pushed Mumm Napa&#8217;s harvest into the second week of August this year.<\/p>\n<p>The weather was ideal for Pinot Noir and Chardonnay grapes, which are the primary varieties used in making sparkling wine. Both are traditionally harvested at lower ripeness levels than those used to create still wine.<\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone size-full wp-image-13878\" src=\"https:\/\/dailyovation.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/08\/Napa-Valley-.jpg\" alt=\"Napa Valley\" width=\"3456\" height=\"2304\" \/><\/p>\n<p>The balanced warm afternoon and cold night temperatures provided perfect hang time for fruit to maintain optimal acidity and develop a fruit flavor complexity. Approximately 35 tons of Pinot Noir were harvested by Mumm Napa early Wednesday morning.<\/p>\n<blockquote><p><em>&#8220;This growing season has been near perfect in\u00a0<span class=\"xn-location\">Napa Valley<\/span>,&#8221; said winemaker\u00a0<span class=\"xn-person\">Ludovic Dervin<\/span>. &#8220;We&#8217;ve had prime ripening conditions, allowing for slow flavor development, as well as complexity and freshness.&#8221;<\/em><\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p>Mumm\u00a0<span class=\"xn-location\">Napa<\/span>\u00a0is one of\u00a0<span class=\"xn-location\">California&#8217;s<\/span>\u00a0top sparkling wine producers and one of the most popular destinations for wine country visitors.
