This year’s Film in California Conference<\/strong> on\u00a0Saturday, May 5<\/span>th<\/sup>\u00a0at Los Angeles Center Studios<\/strong> will bring together more than 500 production industry professionals and two dozen regional film commissions for a day filled with celebration, learning, and discussion focused on big issues impacting media production in the Golden State.<\/p>\n It will be held amid sustained growth in production and a renewed sense of optimism generated by the state’s expanded Film & TV Tax Credit Program 2.0. The new conference venue at a theater within Los Angeles Center Studios reinforces the good news narrative. For the past several years the conference was held on a soundstage at another L.A.-area production facility, but that soundstage and just about every other soundstage in town is currently booked to capacity.<\/p>\n This year’s day-long conference will kick off with a keynote address by award-winning actor\u00a0Courtney B. Vance<\/span>, whose long list of\u00a0California<\/span>-based credits include playing\u00a0Johnnie Cochran<\/span>\u00a0in the recent series “American Crime Story: The People v. O.J. Simpson.”<\/p>\n Sessions will begin with “The Making of the Amazon Series\u00a0Bosch<\/i>” panel featuring best-selling author and executive producer\u00a0Michael Connelly<\/span>, lead actor\u00a0Titus Welliver<\/span>\u00a0and other members of the creative team, with moderator\u00a0Elvis Mitchell<\/span>\u00a0of KCRW’s “The Treatment.”<\/p>\n Other panels include “Women Behind the Scenes,” moderated by Paramount Television SVP of Production Debra Bergman; “Film Festivals \u2013 A Primer,” moderated by ABC7 Entertainment Reporter\u00a0George Pennacchio<\/span>; and “The Magic of Visual Effects,” moderated by award-winning visual effects producer\u00a0Joyce Cox<\/span>.<\/p>\n The conference will conclude with a presentation of the 3rd<\/sup>\u00a0Annual California Golden Slate Award to\u00a0NCIS\u00a0<\/i>Executive Producer Mark Horowitz for his long record of in-state production. Under his leadership,\u00a0NCIS\u00a0<\/i>(now the seventh longest-running scripted primetime series in U.S. TV history) has been produced in\u00a0California<\/span>\u00a0for 15 seasons.<\/p>\n The award will be presented to Mr. Horowitz by actor\u00a0Wilmer Valderrama<\/span>, who plays special agent\u00a0Nick Torres<\/span>\u00a0on\u00a0NCIS<\/i>\u00a0(also known for his role as Fez in the sitcom\u00a0That ’70s Show<\/i>).<\/p>\n The\u00a0Golden Slate<\/span>\u00a0Award honors individuals who champion filming in\u00a0California<\/span>\u00a0and whose body of work has created a large number of in-state production jobs. Past recipients include\u00a0Ryan Murphy<\/span>\u00a0and\u00a0Betsy Beers<\/span>.<\/p>\n <\/p>\n The Film in California Conference is co-produced by the California Film Commission and FLICS (Film Liaisons in California Statewide) \u2013 a network of 40-plus film commissions from across the state. It’s the only such event held exclusively to promote and celebrate filming in\u00a0California<\/span>.
