Upstart Silver Lake neighborhood option Hot Hot Food is no more, as owner Coly Den Haan is instead helping to spearhead a new restaurant by Jasmine Shimoda, the former executive chef of Downtown wellness den The Springs. The new Hoover Street project will be called Jewel, and it could be open as soon as this weekend.

Driving past Hot Hot Food now only reveals a papered-up space filled with construction equipment and letter on the door teasing a new project to come. That’s Jewel, a plant-based (read: mostly vegan) casual restaurant serving breakfast and lunch daily. There’s granola, porridge, coffee, salads, bowls, and an Impossible Burger all on the menu. But mostly this is the kind of place where locals can pop in for a bite, which means anyone looking for a healthier meal can avoid the line at nearby Sqirl. Most things on the menu lean vegan, and fish and eggs can be added to certain dishes upon request.

While Hot Hot Food only served its fried rice for around nine months, Haan is staying on as a partner in Jewel alongside Shimoda and partner Sharky Shimoda, who hails from Gjelina. Hours will be 8 a.m. to 4 p.m. daily, with an opening slated for this weekend.
