I was lucky enough to get to go to Chicago last weekend and see a light and beautiful flurry of white fluffy snowfall, it definitely helped me ease into this holiday spirit even if I came back to 82-degree weather in California. Living in Los Angeles specifically makes it a little harder for us here to get into that festive cheer because it’s basically a balmy 75 degrees year round. I know it sounds fabulous (and it is most of the time, sorry haters) but a little temperature change would be nice too. We don’t really have seasons here; it’s either “nice” or “really fucking nice” out. Those are seriously the only two options.
We have to go to The Grove or The Americana outdoor shopping malls to even know it’s Christmas time. They set up all these gorgeous lights, there’s amazing life-sized gingerbread houses carefully adorned with all the colorful candies (they aren’t edible, I’ve tried). And somewhere yonder Santa is waiting patiently for his next crying baby to sit on his lap for a photo op. All the Christmas trees are gleaming their lights, bells, and baubles and it looks positively magical. It really feels like you’re walking into a winter wonderland especially when you hear the jolly holiday music playing, despite the deceptively warm breeze blowing by.
And personally, I always get so excited this time of year, you can hear the bells gently jingling, creating a prancing excitement in the air, people seem just a little bit nicer (honestly, I don’t know if that’s really true, maybe it’s just me) and this is when I can shamelessly add a little more glitter and shimmer to my look without looking like I’m trying too hard. And Sadly, after getting my 23 and Me done, I’m not 1/2 nymph or part fairy or anything special, so the holiday season is really the only time of year I get to sparkle my ass off, dork-free.
For this holiday, I’ve picked out some of my favorites for that ultimate festive look. First things first, I usually like to add some sort of shimmer or glitter to my eye lids; it plays up the drama a little bit and who doesn’t feel amazing when they can sparkle a little bit, especially on a regular old Tuesday? It’s the holiday, so anything goes! I like to use Stila’s Glitter and Glow Liquid Eye Shadow. This stuff is buildable for that extra twinkle and it doesn’t crack or fall down your face midday. It lasts as long as YOU want it to (Afterparty, here we come!). My favorite colors right now are the Smokey Storm and the Gold Goddess but there are several other colors to choose from. Trust me, you won’t be disappointed.
After my eyeshadow is primed and set, I like to line my upper lash line with a kohl black liquid liner. Kat Von D is my usual go-to, I really like the tip (ENTER ANY “just the tip” joke here) because it allows me to create precision lines, (unless of course, I’ve had 42 cups of coffee then maybe I’ll pass on the liner altogether) it’s also waterproof and if I just judge it by its name, “Tattoo Liner”, you can assume that this stuff stays put for days if you want/need it to. No judgment, Dirty Sally. Keep that party goin!
By using a liquid liner you will brighten up your eyeshadow just by adding a little dimension. For an extra added pop, follow your lash line and extend a slight upward wing at the outer corner of your eye, this creates that perfect cat eye, then you can coat your lashes with your favorite mascara and your eyes are lashing-batting ready.
The holidays to me always call for a bright red lip. Go bold or go home, right? There are so many amazing choices out there but my latest pick for this season is from the Sephora Brand. It’s cheaper than some of the popular prestige brands and somehow it looks amazing on any skin tone. It’s called Always Red and it’s a bold, creamy liquid matte. It doesn’t dry out your lips at all and surprisingly, for a long-lasting lipstick it doesn’t crack or bleed. It’s the perfect classic, sexy red. I hope you have some mistletoe ready because you’re going to need it. Swak!
Lastly to sufficiently get myself looking like the ethereal Christmas angel that I am, I like to add some highlighter to my finished look just to give the illusion of being in candlelight. Fyi, No one looks shitty in candlelight. By using an iridescent metallic powder on your upper cheekbones, bridge of your nose, cupids bow and brow bone, you can highlight your features with a soft subtle glow. My favorite right now is from Anastasia, it’s called the Aura Glow kit and it’s complete with six beautiful shades that can be used wet or dry, alone or layered. You can even mix them with your eyeshadow or lipstick to customize any color to your liking. What are you waiting for, let’s get GLOWING already.
