Responsive design is a front-end development process that allows web pages to fit the screens of the device it is displayed on, whether it is a desktop, laptop, tablet, or mobile device. This is done by customizing a cascading style sheet (CSS) so that a website can scale the entire width of a browser, regardless of the device that is being used.

Having a responsive design is ideal because it gives you a lot of control over your layout if you are at ease with handling media queries, which are used to control the layout on a variety of screen sizes and devices. In other words, the website responds based on the device being used and the layout is adjusted to optimize readability and user experience. Depending on the device, elements may be scaled up or down. Some elements may be removed completely. Some elements arranged differently than in the fixed desktop version of the site.

This has always worked best for phones with smaller screens. Devices that have a larger screen display (i.e. the Samsung Galaxy and some of the newer iphones on the market) will still display the mobile version of the site – just not at full screen.
