Amongst the dozens of wineries that took part in the 3rd Annual Garagiste Festival: UrbanExposure at the historic Wiltern Theatre in Los Angeles, I quickly grew fond of onewinery in particular. With very many wonderful winemakers from all over California at this event, I had the pleasure of tasting countless fantastic wines but I found myself seeking something that would really spark my interest and light up my taste buds. That is up until I came across Vines on the Marycrest. Established in 2005 by Victor and Jennifer Abascal, they are a family winery based in Paso Robles, California.

Being a lover of wine and music, what captivated me the most about Vines on theMarycrest was the time and thought they put into their award-winning signature blends. As an admirer of the 70’s CBGB punk scene in New York, I was excited to try the “Heart of Glass” blend which is a tribute to Blondie. And who wouldn’t like a blend inspired by The Who? They have got that covered with the “My Generation” blend. Aside from a couple wines in recognition of rock, they also have a couple blends dedicated to jazz: “Round Midnight” and “Satin Doll”. “Round Midnight” is a jazz standard written by pianist Thelonious Monk. It is the most recorded jazz standard written by a jazz musician. “Satin Doll”, originally written by Duke Ellington and Billy Strayhorn (with lyrics by Johnny Mercer), was recorded countless times by various artists including Ella Fitzgerald, Frank Sinatra, and Nancy Wilson. Clearly, the creators of these blends have excellent taste in wine and music.

Each one of these blends is just as impactful as the songs themselves. It is almost as if these blends have a touch of music in each bottle. With a unique taste, they are diverse and memorable. Other signature blends of Vines on the Marycrest include the tasty Syrah, Grenache, Zinfandel, Petite Sirah, and Mourvèdre. Needless to say, I am elated to have come across Vines on the Marycrest. They do an incredible job of intermixing the fine art of music and wine. That in itself is a priceless pairing.
