In Pursuit of Balance brings serious Chardonnay and Pinot Noir talk to Los Angeles on Wednesday February 6 2013. Join the seminars, attend the afternoon tasting, or do both. Either way, these wineries create an excellent, tasty and intelligent way to spend the day.
The Los Angeles event takes place at The London Hotel in West Hollywood. The morning starts off at 10am with “Relevance and Purpose in California Chardonnay” which examines the most popular wine in California as hosted by San Francisco Chronicle’s Wine Editor Jon Bonne.
Chardonnay remains the most popular wine in California. But what is its purpose? Despite the “Anything But Chardonnay” backlash of the last decade, why do some of the best winemakers in California continue to tackle this protean grape? Is it a profound vehicle to express terroir, or just base material for a winemaking style? If the former, how is terroir expression in Chardonnay best achieved? These are questions that are relevant not just for California, but also for Burgundy and the rest of the Chardonnay producing wine world.
Following at 11:30am is Exploring Whole Cluster Fermentation in Pinot Noir hosted by author Jordan Mackay. The panel debates the controversial techniques of de-stemming grapes.
Whole cluster fermentation (leaving the grapes on the stems during fermentation) is a controversial technique when it comes to pinot noir. A winemaking process that dates back centuries. the practice fell out of favor with the advent of modern destemmers, as including stems in fermentations has major impact on the finished product. Nevertheless, following the lead of some of Burgundy’s most heralded domaines (Romanée-Conti, Leroy and Dujac, to name a few), a growing number of California winemakers are enthusiastically employing the technique. In this seminar you will taste examples of whole cluster pinots from IPOB winemakers and come to understand why this method of fermentation has both enthusiastic adherents and skeptical naysayers.
Finally in the afternoon is a general tasting that includes the 28 members wineries, including: Anthill Farms – Arnot-Roberts – Au Bon Climat – Bluxome – Calera – Ceritas – Chanin – Cobb – Copain – Drew – Failla – Hirsch – Knez – Kutch – LaRue – LIOCO – Littorai – Mount Eden – Native9 – Ojai – Peay – Red Car – Sandhi – Soliste – Twomey – Tyler – Varner – Wind Gap.
In Pursuit of Balance was created by Rajat Parr of Michael Mina and RN74, and Jasmine Hirsch of Hirsch Vineyards, to celebrate wineries striving to produce balanced pinot noir and chardonnay in California. Our first event was held in San Francisco in 2011.
