Dr. Joel M. Fisher is a renowned wine enthusiast, educator and columnist. He also leads Los Angeles’ biggest and most prestigious wine, brew and spirits festival LA WineFest. This week Dr. Fisher discusses summer wine events and August’s upcoming Rhone Rangers event:
Summer is just beginning. We’ve survived Carmagedon (or Autodammerung if you heard that on KUSC), and wine events are bursting out all over. The Saban Free Clinic held its annual food and wine gig at Sunset Gower last Saturday night, and 1,000 plus people braved the freeways to attend. Food was pretty good; wine was mixed bunch but fortunately some of my friends were there — like Dan Fredman with Martian Wines, Jason Hayes with a good selection from WJ Deutsch, and our colleagues from Wilson-Daniels who pour some good wines for your enjoyment and edification.
Some programs coming up for you to consider — a day apart and not far from each other: Visit the 1st Toast & Taste Santa Monica – an afternoon of wine, beer and food truck fare benefiting the Boys & Girls Clubs of Santa Monica. Enjoy wine and beer tastings, a silent auction and live entertainment. Enjoy yourself in a low key atmosphere and do your part to help raise funds that will continue and expand the programs the Club offers to the more than 7,000 L.A.-area kids served each year
Saturday afternoon, August 6, 2-6 pm. Another event is headed our way the next day:
Rhone Rangers move into Los Angeles for their annual trade & consumer tasting event on Sunday, August 7, 2011. 35 wineries, paired with artisan cheeses and tapas plates can be enjoyed and studied. The Rhone event takes place at Pier 59 Studios West in Santa Monica. Parking should be plentiful outside the back entrance. I’ve been there and it’s not too hard to find your way there. Just pay attention after leaving the freeway and heading towards Michigan Avenue. Enjoy. I’ll be leaving as you get there, but hopefully we can say a quick hello before you go on in.
