Follow the charismatic lead of Mark Ballas, award-winning ballroom dancer on “Dancing with the Stars,” as he heads a cadre of handy citizens and celebrities on a 5K walk from Pacoima Plaza to The Habitat Pacoima Site. At the Phase 3 of 24 homes’ site, helpers with a can-do attitude participate in a fun-filled construction relay to help build better futures for Habitat’s newest homeowners. After an enriching experience raising the walls on a brand new home, Ballas leads everyone back to the Pacoima Plaza for a celebration with BBQ picnic, a special performance by Ballas, celebrity entertainment, and awards.
Last year, over 900 community members, including the cast of Jimmy Kimmel Live! and 90210, took part in the festivities and joined Wayne Colmer, chairman of the Habitat affiliate serving the San Fernando and Santa Clarita Valleys, in advocating for the need to “make our world a better, safer place to live – especially for children.”
Trevor Donovan, actor in the hot series “90210” and avid Habitat supporter, is the event emcee and lends his construction skills to Habitat’s Pacoima project. Donovan is joined by fellow 90210 cast mate, Matt Lanter, as well as a host of adult and youth stars from hit TV shows such as CSI, Medium, Modern Family, NCIS, Life Unexpected, The Young & The Restless, Knight Rider, Disney’s Ant Farm, and more.
“American Dream Walk” is a family-friendly event and Habitat encourages youths to share in the experience and follow the example of young Hollywood stars that have formed the Hollywood Kids for Habitat team and are challenging the adult stars to see who can raise the most funds.
Habitat for Humanity provides affordable homes with 0% mortgages for working families earning less than 50% of the average income and also empowers families to become productive members of their community. “Our Habitat affiliate strives to uniquely serve our neighbors,” said Colmer. “This is accomplished through the Habitat Enriched Neighborhood model, which brings in services and education that promote self sufficiency. Our communities are built around a model that requires sweat equity and provides supportive services, going well beyond traditional affordable housing,” Colmer explained. “This new model literally lifts the top off the ‘concrete ceiling’ that impairs the lives of the working poor and limits the future of their children.”
As a result, this Habitat affiliate reports 100% graduation rates, 0% foreclosure rates, 92% of teens enrolled in college or trade school, drastically reduced teen pregnancy rates and many more positive results that affect quality of life.
The Habitat Pacoima project will eventually consist of 61 homes, 37 of which are already occupied and another 24 of which will be completed by summer 2011.
