Meghan Markle’s Wedding Cake Is Getting a Healthy Twist

Meghan Markle Wedding Cake Healthy

Wedding cakes are rarely considered healthy, but Suits star and royal bride-to-be Meghan Markle has requested a couple of healthy inclusions for her and Prince Harry’s own nuptials. The actress, who chooses a healthy smoothie of apple, kale, spinach, lemon, and ginger over drinking coffee in the morning, and her groom are reportedly choosing a couple of healthy and organic ingredients for the royal wedding cake.

In a tweet on the palace’s official Twitter account, @KensingtonRoyal, it was announced that Markle and Prince Harry have requested their cake be made by a London-based bakery, Violet Cakes.

“For their wedding cake Prince Harry and Ms. Meghan Markle have chosen pastry chef Claire Ptak, owner of the London-based bakery @violetcakes,” the Tweet reads. Interestingly, Violet Cakes uses organic flour, sugar, milk, and eggs, and a note on their website says that “Many of the other ingredients are organic as well, like our Madagascan vanilla pods and pure cane molasses.”

Although there was some speculation that the royal couple would choose a banana cake, Kensington Palace also announced on Twitter that they have requested a “lemon elderflower cake that will incorporate the bright [flavors] of spring. It will be covered with buttercream and decorated with fresh flowers.”

In an announcement on Instagram, Violet Cakes noted that the royal couple share many of the bakery’s values “regarding food provenance, sustainability, seasonality and of course, flavour!”

The website also highlights that Violet Cakes’ limited edition buttercream icings use seasonal products—another tick in the healthy-ish column:

“They are made by whipping up butter and sugar then gently folding in fresh fruit purees, melted Valrhona dark chocolate, freshly brewed espresso, home-made flower cordials or dark caramel made with sea salt.”

Aside from the well-documented benefits of organic ingredients, lemon and elderflower are also known to help support the immune system and aid digestion, which is exactly what everyone needs after a big wedding.
